Vintage River Cottage
I love the stories behind a project. Who is involved, what is the property like on that first visit, and what is the vision for what it can be. That is what motivates me. It’s what I love to do. It’s what I would do even if I wasn’t getting paid.
A Vintage Revival
We just completed an extensive remodeling and furnishing project that the firm started work on in the Fall of 2014. We were called in to renovate a ranch house set on a gently rolling twenty acres on the East side of Santa Rosa at the foot of Hood Mountain.
The original house was a simple structure, of about 1800 square feet. The clients wanted to re-work the existing footprint, create a smart floor plan that didn't waste square footage, and add 640 square feet to the overall size. Aesthetically they wanted a vintage inspired farmhouse that was both comfortable and elegant.
Sonoma Contemporary Cottage
This project in the town of Sonoma just makes me happy.
Our client purchased a vintage, 100 year old cottage with lots of character in the middle of the pandemic, as an escape from the City. The house needed a refresh and full furnishings inside and out. She wanted to be able to entertain friends and family in a space that was beautiful, functional but with materials that would hold up, and wanted to add color and make the spaces feel clean, fun and warm.
West Highland Ranch
The TBD team was called in to finish and furnish a new build that was just wrapping up in early 2021. The Sebastopol single story home, was a beautiful take on the modern farmhouse. It was mostly neutral in tone and needed a plan that infused the warm neutrals with a little personality. We wanted to express in design the lively, welcoming nature of our clients and their little gang of Westies.
Timbuctoo Sporting Estate Adds A Modern Log Cabin
It is not everyday that we get asked to design a brand new log cabin, so we jumped at the chance to envision this modern cabin when our client called. Having gone through the design process on the client’s primary home, we had a pretty good idea of direction but the fun was putting our spin on a log home.
Our clients had purchased a sporting estate property in Yuba consisting of 700 acres with an incredible lodge and a pond. They wanted to add what began as a caretaker’s cabin but ended up being the primary house for the client’s when at the property.
Matanzas Creek Modern
The tale of the transformation of this home began way back in Winter of 2017.
Our wonderful clients, referred by a colleague at Pedersen’s called about renovating what was their master bathroom in a sprawling 1958 mid-century home.
A smaller project to begin, it was intriguing on a number of levels. We wanted to see what TBD had to offer as our take on mid-century modern, and our client’s extensive art collection was a clue that the process would be interesting and the end result would most likely be beautiful.
A Day in Sebastopol
We are so fortunate to live and work in Sonoma County. I realize this more and more when traveling to other places. The weather, the people and the vast amount of places to visit and things to do, just make our area truly one of a kind.
The Loft
In November of 2020, we were contacted by a San Francisco couple who had recently purchased one of the lofts on Florence Avenue, here in Sebastopol. The Florence Lofts is a live-work project with twelve units, each with 620 square feet of office pace and 900 square feet of living quarters, built on a 1.3-acre parcel just steps from downtown Sebastopol.
Leeward House
Our clients reached out to us in the Fall of 2021, essentially wanting to modernize a 1990’s Sea Ranch house.
We started with a walk-through of the space, which was a fairly traditional Sea Ranch floor plan with bedrooms on the entry-level and the living and masters on the second floor. It’s a good plan, as it allows better site lines, and in this home, there were spectacular ocean views.
Harrison House Garden
The late Spring rains pushed back the start of construction on our back yard, but we were finally able to break ground just after Easter. Just a little bit of history, when we first landscaped the backyard, we added a wide set of steps from the deck down to a large grass area, which made sense with two small kids. But, with the last number of years of drought conditions, it finally pushed us to remove the grass and rethink the overall design.
High Point Market Trends
We try and make the trip to Market at least every other year because it is just such a comprehensive assortment of vendors that we love. There are about 2,000 exhibitors, 180 buildings, and over 10,000 square feet of showroom space. Read more on what we saw and loved!
Wallpaper Forever!
We can see when someone was once traumatized by bad wallpaper, but fortunately for us, many of our clients are open to the idea and understand that it can add color and texture to a space. We are here to bring it back... in its best way.
Spring Gardens & Outdoor Furnishings
With April on its way in, it seemed fitting to share a blog post with some garden inspo and a few outdoor pieces that we love for this season.
Just the right hue…this time in green
Looking back over the last few years, green has made its way into many of our designs. The right shade of green can make a room feel vibrant and exotic, but it can also have a relaxing characteristic. It is all about the hue.
Ho, Ho, Holiday Decorating
I love the Holidays, and while I appreciate those who love to decorate for any and all seasons, I like a light touch when it comes to Holiday decorating. I tend to lean towards simple, natural materials like branches, live trees, and ornamentation that speaks to, well, nature.
A Set Table, Take Two
My preference in table settings is to use natural elements such as flowers, greenery, and elements of wood, metal and of course ceramics. Read more about Tama's love for setting a table and creating a beautiful gathering.
Harrison House Remodel
In this post, Tama shares recent updates made to her home. “We have touched and replaced each surface at least once since 1998. The gallons of paint that we have used, my husband jokes, has reduced our interior square footage. He. may be right.”
Decoding Design Series: Breaking Down the Consultation
The consultation is one of my favorite parts of my work. It is the first in-person meeting with the potential client and our first eyes on the house itself. I like that we go in relatively cold, so it is a very visual experience and really exciting to see what all needs to be addressed. I sometimes feel like a design detective; putting together what we see, what the client sees and trying to figure out just where we are all going.
Before & After: A Medley of Recent Interior Design Projects
We thought it would be fun to post some before and after images of some of our recent interior design and home renovation projects in the Sonoma County area.
Just the Right Hue
Life around here has been really busy with on-going projects, new clients, meetings and planning. I have not had as much time as I would like to put towards curating new finds. But, I have had a bit of time to put together my current go-to paint favorites. Benjamin Moore is my paint of choice. They have a lovely selection of historic and traditional colors. Their paints tend to be the more classic, grayed colors, which suit my design style quite nicely.
