West Highland Ranch

The TBD team was called in to finish and furnish a new build that was just wrapping up in early 2021. The Sebastopol single story home, was a beautiful take on the modern farmhouse. It was mostly neutral in tone and needed a plan that infused the warm neutrals with a little personality. We wanted to express in design the lively, welcoming nature of our clients and their little gang of Westies.

Our main goal was to add character, texture, color and pattern to the warm back drop that was already set. Our clienthad some design help with the initial build but had been working on her own to finish up and needed some help crossingthe finish line. We made a few changes with mirrors, lighting and hardware but did the heavy lifting with paint, wallpaper and furnishings to pull it all together.

The main living area or great room needed a boost and a direction. Our first item was to add window coverings. We find that sometimes that is the last thing clients have on their list, but they add such an important layer and truly finish a space.

A large open living space with windows taking up two walls.

And after. The raw wood drapery hardware, which is traditional in style but feels a more modern with no finish sets off the great room which speaks to the farmhouse but in a fresh way in my opinion. The drapery are a textured linen the color of burlap with a tassel detail on the leading edge. I love the moody sofas and the layering of color, tone and texture. It feels both warm and comfortable and works with three rascally dogs.

Off the great room, is the office used as a home base for the husband who is in the construction industry. We wanted toadd color and more of a library feel for a space that he would feel comfortable in and be able to get some work done. So,why not wrap the room in blue grasscloth and add a pull out sofa in a blue velvet that feels like it has always been there.By the way, he loves it. We hear he is even doing yoga in this space. Win, win!

Down the hall to the bedrooms, we added a gallery wall of Westies, showing them in all their glory. Here are a few to view...Are they not the most ridiculous? They are so funny and full of life. They greeted us, loudly, and would follow us around when we were on-site. We think we may only work for clients with dogs from now on.

Next, we headed to the master suite. It was quite a large room which called for careful thought with furniture and scale. We wanted to find just the right blue, with enough strength to make a statement and set off the existing millwork on the headboard wall.

An empty master bedroom with wainscoting panels on the back wall.
The same bedroom, now with powder blue walls. The bed has a sage green upholstered headboard and red velvet accent pillows.

We went a little more eclectic with the guest bedroom and added a bright, geometric wallpaper and an array of fabrics. It created such a fun, vibrant space that still feels incredibly comfortable and inviting.

We took that inspiration in another bright color to the powder bath. Fun and fitting in a traditional nod. Just a little jewel to come across. We added a tall, narrow beveled mirror with an inset sconce.I love it and it just may be my current favorite powder bath. What do you think?
